When you look at this hat, you aren’t just looking at Mammoth—you are looking at the birth of the “Extreme” ski movement and the dawn of snowboarding.
In 1988, Greg Stump released his seminal ski film, The Blizzard of AAAAAHH’s, which shifted ski culture away from rigid racing gates and toward cliff-drops, hot-dogging, and neon-clad rebellion. At the exact same time, early snowboarders (often decked out in similar neon and shiny fabrics) were fighting for the right to ride the chairlifts at major resorts. This hat shares a spiritual lineage with the legendary, blindingly bright outerwear worn by extreme skiing pioneers like Scot Schmidt and Glen Plake up north at Olympic Valley.
